MUMBAI – The iCOMDEX Composite index of the Multi Commodity Exchange of India traded lower Thursday, dragged down by a fall in all the three component indices. The index opened at 24222.95 points against Wednesday's close of 24252.71 points. At 1024 IST, the index was down 1.3% at 23928.96 points.
Among the three components of the Composite index, the bullion index traded 1.3% lower, as gold declined 1% and silver 2.3% from the previous day's closing. Bullion prices fell as the US Federal Reserve officials signalled rate hikes later this year. Nine of the US central bank's 19 policymakers now believe they will need to raise the policy rate this year, according to projections published on Wednesday after the Fed announced its decision to leave the policy rate in its current 3.50-3.75% range. Typically, higher interest rates dim the appeal of the non-interest-bearing precious metal.
The energy index was down 2%, with crude oil trading 2% lower and natural gas down 0.1%. The base metal index fell 0.9% with copper down 1% and zinc down 0.9%. Aluminium was trading 1% lower and lead was down 0.2%.
The MCX iCOMDEX comprises a series of real-time commodity futures price indices and tracks the performance of a basket of commodity futures. It serves as a benchmark for market movements in bullion, base metals, and energy. End
