MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon is unlikely to advance over Delhi on or before its normal date of Jun. 27, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. The western arm of the monsoon trough has stalled over the Konkan region since Jun. 8, while the eastern end of the trough has remained stationary near Muzaffarpur in Bihar for the past five days, and no major advance of either end is likely for the next five days, the weather agency said.

 

Even if the monsoon trough progresses, its movement is likely to remain sluggish due to unfavourable weather conditions, the agency said. As such, the onset of the monsoon over Delhi is likely to be delayed, it said.

 

Despite the delay, pre-monsoon showers are likely to continue over Delhi during the week, the agency said. Rainfall and thunderstorms will remain short-lived and light in intensity but they will keep temperatures in check, preventing the mercury from touching the 40 degrees Celsius mark, it said.

 

The base weather station at Safdarjung in Delhi recorded maximum temperatures of around 33 degrees Celsius in the past few days, which is nearly 6 degrees Celsius below normal, while the minimum temperatures also remained 4 degrees below normal. A marginal rise in temperatures is expected in the next 3-4 days and the mercury is likely to stay in the higher 30 degrees Celsius range till Sunday, Skymet said. 

 

In 2025, the monsoon advanced over Delhi on Jun. 29 while simultaneously covering the rest of the country, completing the coverage of the entire Indian mainland more than a week ahead of the normal date of Jul. 8. The monsoon has been hitting Delhi within the error margin of the normal date, which is plus or minus five days, for the past four years, the weather agency said. In 2021, it reached Delhi on Jul. 13, which was the second-most delayed onset in the city. The most delayed onset of monsoon over the city was in 1987, when it hit Delhi on Jul. 26.  End
