NEW DELHI – India and the European Union will sign the long-awaited free trade agreement by the end of 2026, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said. India and the EU concluded the trade deal in January.

 

"Since we have concluded the mother of all trade deals, we have been moving fast to deliver on our commitments," von der Leyen said on social media platform X after talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G7 summit on Wednesday. "We will sign the Free Trade Agreement by the end of the year. And accelerate work on an investment agreement. We will also step up security & defence cooperation. And join forces for better connectivity by advancing IMEC, the India–Middle East–Europe Corridor," she added.

 

Along with von der Leyen, Modi also held talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The leaders discussed progress on the Joint India-EU Comprehensive Strategic Agenda and shared the view that it would further reinforce the India-EU strategic partnership and deliver mutually beneficial, transformative outcomes. In the financial year 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), India-EU trade was worth $64 billion. End
