MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra were steady due to need-based demand at higher rates, traders said. Prices have increased in the past few days and are likely to be range-bound for some time, they said.

In Uttar Pradesh, mills kept prices steady as demand was need-based, Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India, said. Mills want demand to pick up at the existing prices, hence they are not increasing prices further, Gupta said. Mills had raised the price by INR 20–INR 25 per 100 kg on Monday as there was firm demand from traders in the resales markets, Gupta said.

Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady after increasing prices the previous day, Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association said. Prices rose the previous day, as there was firm demand from ice-cream and cold drink manufacturers amid high temperatures in the state, Kuvadia said.

The Southwest monsoon has so far been behind schedule in many parts of western and central India. Currently, the monsoon trough passes through Harnai and Solapur in Maharashtra, Hyderabad and Bhadrachalam in Telangana, Koraput and Phulbani in Odisha, Ranchi in Jharkhand, and Muzaffarpur and Jamui in Bihar, India Meteorological Department said. The monsoon trough has been stuck over the western parts of the country since Jun. 8.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Flat at INR 4,015-INR 4,150 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 4,020 INR 4,165 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 4,082-INR 4,162 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,955-INR 3,970 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 2036 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was up 1% at 13.96 cents per pound, tracking a rise in crude oil prices on NYMEX. Higher crude oil prices increase the incentive to divert sucrose for ethanol production, decreasing the availability of sugar in the market.  End

US$1 = INR 94.52
