MUMBAI – Domestic equity market closed higher for the fourth straight session supported by falling crude oil prices and a largely stable rupee. Crude oil prices continued to hover below the $80 per barrel mark Wednesday, amid hope of a return to stability in global energy markets with a potential US-Iran peace agreement.

The Nifty 50 settled at 24085.70, up 96.55 points or 0.4%, after rising to an over one-month high of 24108.20 points intraday. The BSE Sensex closed at 77155.62, up 347.14 points or 0.5%. The 30-stock index had hit an over one-month high of 77218.99 intraday. A rise in defence, metal, information technology and select fast-moving consumer goods stocks supported gains in the 50-stock index. A decline in automobile stocks limited the rise in the index.

Broader market indices largely outperformed the benchmarks, with small-cap indices leading the gains, up 0.7–0.8%. Sectoral indices were largely mixed, with Nifty Consumer Durables leading the gains, up around 2%, while Nifty Auto was the worst hit, down 0.6%.

Shares of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles declined over 8?ter the company guided for lower-than-expected earnings before interest and tax margin and revenue growth for Jaguar Land Rover. The company expects its UK-based luxury car arm to post an EBIT margin of around 4% in 2026-27 (Apr-Mar) and a revenue of 26 bln pound sterling, up 13% on year. An analyst at a domestic brokerage had projected JLR's revenue to grow 17% on year and EBIT margin to be 6% in FY27. Shares of most automobile stocks fell after this, with the Nifty Auto index falling around 1% to 26724.40 points.

Shares of major room air-conditioner makers and related consumer durables companies such as Blue Star, Voltas, PG Electroplast, Havells India, and Amber Enterprises India ended 0.7-4.6% higher. Expectations of a below-normal monsoon and higher temperatures due to El Nino are seen boosting demand for cooling products, analysts said. Further, optimism around a potential US-Iran deal eased concerns about higher raw material prices and input supply shortages, supporting the positive sentiment around the stocks.

Most defence stocks also saw strong buying interest after Union Minister of Defence Rajnath Singh said India's annual defence production hit a record high of INR 1.78 trillion in financial year 2025–26 (Apr-Mar). The government also highlighted the sector's export momentum. The country's defence exports reached a record INR 384.24 billion during FY26, further strengthening investor confidence in the long-term growth prospects of domestic defence companies. The thematic Nifty India Defence gained nearly 4%, led by Paras Defence and Space Technologies, MTAR Technologies, Data Patterns (India), Astra Microwave Products, Bharat Dynamics, and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers, which rose 6–18%.

Most information technology stocks rose ahead of the US Federal Reserve's policy decision due later in the day, with investors awaiting cues on the central bank's interest-rate outlook. The stocks rose for the third consecutive session amid optimism over a US-Iran peace deal likely to be signed Friday, easing inflation concerns globally. Further, valuations of these stocks have become cheap post their recent sharp fall, making them attractive for investors, two analysts covering the sector at domestic brokerages said. The Nifty IT index closed around 1% higher at 28809.55 points with most of its constituents ending higher.

Shares of Mumbai-based real estate companies such as Oberoi Realty, Godrej Properties, Lodha Developers, Raymond Realty, and Aditya Birla Real Estate fell 0.6–2.5?ter the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation announced suspension of water supply to construction sites, amid an acute shortage caused by delayed monsoon. The Realty Nifty index fell 0.4% and was among the worst hit sectoral index. It fell after gaining for three consecutive sessions, during which the index gained 10%.

Among stocks, shares of Trent surged more than 7% and was the top gaining Nifty 50 stock. Shares of the Tata group company rose 7.5% to an over seven-month high of INR 3,115 intraday before closing at 3102.80 points. Shares of IDBI Bank jumped 17% amid heavy trading volumes and renewed optimism around the lender's long-delayed privatisation process. Media reports said that the government was exploring ways to revive stake-sale discussions. Pine Labs rose over 1?ter brokerages reiterated bullish calls on the fintech company, stating the company's growth forecast and analyst-meet commentary reinforced confidence in its technical moat and growth outlook.

BSE fell around 4%, snapping a three-day winning streak after reports said its peer National Stock Exchange is likely to file its draft papers for its initial public offering with the Securities and Exchange Board of India later in the day. Shares of Cyient declined over 3% Wednesday, the record date for its share buyback. In April, the company's board had approved the buyback of 6.4 million shares at INR 1,125 per share, amounting to INR 7.2 billion.
