Gujarat kharif acreage up 25% on year at 427,152 ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – Farmers in Gujarat have sown kharif crops across 427,152 hectares as of Monday, up more than 25% from 341,188 hectares sown a year ago, according to a release by the state agriculture department. The normal acreage for the season in the state is 8.53 million hectares, of which around 5% has been covered so far.
The area under paddy rose to 2,490 hectares from 55 hectares a year ago, the data showed. The area sown with maize rose to 610 hectares from 75 hectares a year ago, and that with bajra was up at 366 hectares from 86 hectares a year ago.
Tur acreage so far in the state was 600 hectares, up from 168 hectares a year ago, according to the data. The area under moong fell to 42 hectares from 57 hectares, while that under urad rose to 23 hectares from 7 hectares. The total area under pulses was up at 673 hectares from 232 hectares a year ago.
The total area under all oilseeds so far was 137,473 hectares, up from 122,728 hectares a year ago, the data showed. Groundnut acreage rose to 136,541 hectares from 122,471 hectares, and the area under soybean was up at 448 hectares from 159 hectares.
Cotton acreage in the state was 239,485 hectares, up from 187,681 hectares a year ago. The area sown with vegetables rose to 18,726 hectares from 12,473 hectares a year ago, according to the data.
Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. During Jun. 1-16, Gujarat recorded 6.2 millimetres of rainfall, 82?low the normal for the period, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. The southwest monsoon is yet to advance over Gujarat as of Wednesday, a delay of two days from the normal monsoon onset date of Jun. 15. End
