NEW DELHI – Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has said states likely to be severely hit by below-normal or uneven rainfall due to El Nino conditions will be given district-level crop-wise contingency plans in advance during kharif cultivation. Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Odisha, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Maharashtra are the states likely to record a weak monsoon.

"In the 9–10 states where the impact of El Nino may be relatively higher, coordinated meetings should be organised with District Magistrates, Agriculture Departments, Krishi Vigyan Kendras and other extension systems of the identified districts," Chouhan said in a release. He added that vulnerable districts should be clearly identified, and crop-wise contingency plans should be prepared in coordination with state governments to provide farmers with immediate advice and support.

The minister also reviewed fertiliser availability, market prices, reservoir levels, and water storage across states.  End
