MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in Maharashtra rose as demand improved from bulk consumers such as ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers due to high temperatures in the state, traders said. Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady after increasing prices the previous day, they said.

Mills in Maharashtra raised sugar prices by INR 10 per 100 kilograms as demand was firm, Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association, said. In the first half of the month, demand was subdued, but it has started to pick up again as the monsoon has been delayed in the state and temperatures are high. Demand from ice cream and cold drink manufacturers has increased, Kuvadia said.

The southwest monsoon has so far been behind schedule in many parts of western and central India. The northern limit of the monsoon currently passes through Harnai and Solapur in Maharashtra.

In Uttar Pradesh, mills kept prices steady as demand was need-based, Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India, said. Mills had raised the price by INR 20-INR 25 per 100 kg the previous day as demand was firm, he said.

In the first half of the month, demand was sluggish, but it has now begun to pick up as pipeline stocks have been exhausted, he said.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Flat at INR 4,015-INR 4,150 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 4,020 INR 4,165 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Up INR 10 at INR 4,082-INR 4,162 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Up INR 10 at INR 3,955-INR 3,970 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1727 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was down 0.4% to 13.63 cents per pound, tracking a fall in crude oil price on NYMEX. Lower crude oil prices reduce the incentive to divert sucrose for ethanol production, increasing the availability of sugar in the market.  End

US$1 = INR 94.56
