MUMBAI – Prices of chana and tur showed mixed trends in key spot markets across the country, while prices of urad were unchanged, traders said. Chana prices fell in some markets amid low demand, they said. Tur prices eased in some markets post the jump on Monday, though prices are likely to rise in the near term due to concerns about delayed sowing of kharif tur, they said. Urad prices were steady amid the lack of fresh cues, they said.
CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,000-INR 6,100 per 100 kilograms, said Kailash Kakani, a local trader. Prices were unchanged due to limited demand amid steady arrivals, he said. "There is very little demand in the market right now, market sentiment is low, so prices are not moving," he said. Typically, demand for chana rises as consumption of chana dal, or processed chana, and besan, or chana flour, rises once the monsoon sets in, he said. However, with the delay in the monsoon onset this year, hot weather persists in many parts of the country, keeping chana consumption low, he said.
In the near term, prices are likely to remain range-bound, Kakani said. Demand is only likely to rise once the monsoon begins in full swing, and demand for the festival season, which started in August, increases, he said.
Prices of chana in Delhi fell by INR 25 per 100 kg to INR 5,950-INR 5,975 per 100 kg Tuesday, traders said. Prices were weighed down by low demand, they said.
TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 7,400-INR 8,050 per 100 kg, said Mukesh Sanklecha, a local trader. Around 13–14 trucks carrying 20,000–25,000 kg of tur each arrived in the market, he said. Prices have stabilised after they jumped by INR 100 per 100 kg on Monday due to fears of a further delay in kharif tur sowing, he said. The monsoon has not progressed over the western coast of India since Jun. 8, and most of Maharashtra has been left dry since. Conditions are not favourable for the trough's further progress over west India in the next few days at least, the India Meteorological Department said, which has confirmed fears of a delay in sowing, which could ultimately impact production, he said.
As of Friday, tur acreage across the country in the ongoing kharif season slipped over 57% on year to 9,000 hectares, data from the agriculture ministry showed. Prices of tur are likely to be supported in the near term due to a slowdown in tur sowing and the prospects of a rise in demand, Sanklecha said. "Prices are either near or below the minimum support price of INR 8,000 per 100 kg in many spot markets, and millers and traders are expected to take advantage of these prices soon and begin buying tur," he said.
Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 50 per 100 kg to INR 8,300-INR 8,400 per 100 kg Tuesday, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
URAD prices at Chandausi in Uttar Pradesh were steady at INR 8,275-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, traders said. Prices of urad in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were also steady at INR 7,400-INR 8,400 per 100 kg, they said. Prices were unchanged amid lack of fresh cues, they said.
Urad prices are expected to be range-bound with a positive bias in the short term, the association said in its weekly report on Monday. A decline in arrivals of the summer urad crop, low stocks at ports, slow imports due to negative import parity, and limited selling at lower prices are likely to support prices, the association said. Demand for urad is also expected to improve once the monsoon begins in full swing, it said. End
