MUMBAI – The movement of the southwest monsoon trough has stuttered in the past few days, as its western arm has remained in the same position since Jun. 8, while its eastern arm has advanced at a slower pace than usual. Conditions are favourable for further advancement of the trough over more parts of Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Bihar and some parts of Chhattisgarh over the next four to five days, the India Meteorological Department said, but it is likely to remain stalled over west India. 

 

Currently, the monsoon trough passes through Harnai and Solapur in Maharashtra, Hyderabad and Bhadrachalam in Telangana, Koraput and Phulbani in Odisha, Ranchi in Jharkhand, and Muzaffarpur and Jamui in Bihar, the weather department said.

 

The active monsoon trough over east India is likely to lead to very heavy rainfall over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from Wednesday to Monday, while heavy rainfall is likely over Bihar from Wednesday to Monday, the weather bureau said. Thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 kilometres per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are expected over parts of Jharkhand on Friday and Saturday, and over Bihar on Thursday and Friday and Sunday and Monday, the bureau said. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over most parts of east India till Monday.

 

The trough is also likely to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of Assam and Meghalaya from Thursday to Saturday, the weather department said. Heavy rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over several parts of northeast India till Monday, the department said.

 

The strength of the monsoon wave over south peninsula India has declined. Heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Wednesday and Thursday and over Kerala till Wednesday, the weather bureau said. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over multiple parts of south India till Monday, the bureau said.

 

Thundersqualls are expected over parts of west Madhya Pradesh on Thursday and Friday, the bureau said. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over multiple parts of central India till Saturday, the bureau said.

 

The presence of multiple weather systems over and near northwest India is expected to keep up the heightened weather activity over the region in the next few days. Thundersqualls are likely over Rajasthan from Wednesday to Friday, and hailstorms are expected over parts of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad on Thursday and Friday, and over Uttarakhand on Friday. Dust storms are seen over west Rajasthan till Friday, and thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely to persist over most parts of northwest India till Monday. 

 

Heatwave conditions are likely over parts of Chhattisgarh till Wednesday, central Maharashtra and Marathawada on Thursday and Friday, Telangana till Thursday, over Vidarbha till Friday, and over west Uttar Pradesh from Friday to Monday, the weather bureau said. Hot and humid weather conditions are likely over parts of Gangetic West Bengal till Thursday, over Odisha till Saturday, over Konkan and Goa till Friday, and over Andhra Pradesh till Wednesday, the bureau said.  End
