India's rice exports in May up 5% YoY in value terms, silver imports down 87%

MUMBAI – In May, India's exports of tea, tobacco, spices, cashews, oilseed, and fruit and vegetables recorded a fall. On the other hand, other cereals, coffee, rice, oilmeal, petroleum products, gems and jewellery saw an on-year rise in exports. On the imports front, silver recorded a fall in May, while gold, vegetable oil, cotton raw and waste, petroleum, crude, and products, and fruits and vegetables recorded a rise.
The value of India's rice exports in May rose over 5% on year to $1.02 billion, while in Apr-May, it was down 0.7% on year at $2.03 billion, according to data released by the commerce ministry. The country's exports of other cereals rose nearly 263% on year to $76.39 million in May, and in Apr-May the exports rose nearly 239% on year to $131.80 million.
Tea exports from India in May fell 15% on year to $56.13 million, and fell over 16% on year to $113.35 million in Apr-May. Coffee exports were up over 4% on year at $209.49 million in May, and rose nearly 6% on year to $427.69 million in Apr-May.
India's tobacco exports fell nearly 21% on year in May to $140.22 million and over 31% on year in Apr-May to $258.02 million. Spices exports also fell nearly 4% on year to $387.05 million in May and over 5% on year to $797.68 million in Apr-May. The country's exports of cashew fell nearly 2% on year in May and over 7% on year in Apr-May to $20.16 million and $35.95 million, respectively.
Oilseed exports in May fell over 8% on year to $94.43 million, but rose nearly 2% on year to $213.10 million in Apr-May. Oilmeals exports in May rose nearly 25% on year to $111.02 million and in Apr-May exports rose 1% on year to $215.53 million.
The country's fruit and vegetable exports fell 7% on year to $287.63 million in May, and nearly 15% to $592.62 million in Apr-May. Petroleum products exports rose nearly 55% on year to $8.42 billion in May. For Apr-May, petroleum product exports rose nearly 45% on year to $18.17 billion. Meanwhile, gems and jewellery exports rose nearly 7% on year to $2.53 billion in May, but were down 0.4% on year at $4.86 billion in Apr-May.
IMPORTS
In May, India's silver imports fell nearly 87% on year to $75.57 million. In Apr-May the silver imports fell nearly 33% to $486.58 million. Gold imports rose nearly 34% on year to $3.42 billion in May, and 60% on year to $9.04 billion in Apr-May.
In May, vegetable oil imports rose over 32% on year to $1.86 billion, and nearly 36% on year to $3.58 billion in Apr-May. Imports of fruits and vegetables were up over 23% on year at $355.92 million in May, and up over 33% on year to $693.58 million in Apr-May.
India's imports of cotton raw and waste rose over 43% from on year to $146.47 million during May, and 21% on year to $228.05 million in Apr-May. Pulses imports rose nearly 28% on year to $227.14 million in May. However, they fell 9% on year to $448.22 million in Apr-May. Imports of petroleum, crude, and products rose nearly 54% on year to $22.68 billion in May, and nearly 17% on year to $41.30 billion in Apr-May. End
