India received 63% below normal rainfall at 2.2 mm on Monday, says IMD

MUMBAI – India recorded 2.2 millimetres of rainfall on Monday, 63% below the normal of 6 millimetres, data from the India Meteorological Department showed. During Jun. 1–15, the country received 42.4 millimetres of rainfall, 32% below the normal of 62.1 millimetres.

 

All four subdivisions continued to record deficient rainfall on Monday. The intensity of rainfall over south peninsula decreased significantly as the strength of the monsoon trough covering the region waned. The region recorded 70% below normal precipitation at 1.9 millimetres, the data showed. Similarly, east and northeast India, the only other region nearly covered completely by the monsoon trough, did not receive significant rainfall, recording 5.8 millimetres on Monday, 50% below normal.

 

Rainfall in northwest India was 49% below normal at 1.1 millimetres, and in central India, it was 74% below normal at 1.7 millimetres, according to the data.

 

After 15 days into the first month of the monsoon season, only northwest India has recorded above-normal rainfall, while the other three regions recorded a shortfall in showers. 

 

In the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large deficient" in 21, "deficient" in 10, "normal" in two, and "excess" in one. Two subdivisions did not record any showers on Monday, the data showed.  End
