Finance ministry hikes windfall gains tax on diesel, ATF exports

NEW DELHI - The government Monday raised the windfall gains tax on the export of diesel and aviation turbine fuel for the fortnight starting Tuesday. Special additional excise duty, or windfall gains tax, on the export of diesel was increased by INR 0.50 per litre to INR 14.00. The tax on aviation turbine fuel was raised by INR 3 per litre to INR 12.50 per litre.
The finance ministry left the rate of duty on exports of petrol unchanged. It also said in a release that there will be no change in the existing excise duty rates on petrol and diesel for domestic consumption.
The government reviews the export duty on petrol, diesel, and aviation turbine fuel every fortnight. This is the sixth revision since the tax was imposed in March. The windfall gains tax rates are prescribed on the basis of the average international prices of crude oil, petrol, diesel, and aviation turbine fuel prevailing in the period from the last review.
The finance ministry introduced special additional excise duty on exports of petrol, diesel, and aviation turbine fuel on Mar. 27 to ensure domestic availability of petroleum products and discourage exports after the surge in crude oil price following the West Asia war. The war, which began Feb. 28, has increased India's exposure to energy and price shocks, given the country's dependence on the Persian Gulf region for oil and gas supplies. End
