MUMBAI - The National Stock Exchange is planning to expand its contracts in its electronic gold receipts segment by adding 10-milligram and 1-kilogram denomination contracts, according to its Chief Business Development Officer Sriram Krishnan. Currently, electronic gold receipts are available on the NSE in 100-gram, 10-gram, 1-gram, and 100-milligram denominations. For each of these denominations, there are two contracts, one for gold purity of 999 and another for gold purity of 995.
The stock exchange went live with trading in its electronic gold receipts segment on May 18, but after a few trades over the next couple of days in May, there has been no trading volume. Trading will pick up as the supply of electronic gold receipts increases, Krishnan said at a webinar organised by the Commodity Participants Association of India on Monday.
So far, around 4-5 kg of physical gold has been converted into electronic gold receipts, he said. Asked about the strength of the membership on the electronic gold receipts segment, the chief business development officer said 35 trading members and 10-15 clearing members are currently registered on the segment.
Regarding the number of gold storage vaults, Krishnan said there were around 40, with three vaulting partners. At the end of May, NSE announced a collaboration with Sequel Logistics to create vaults for electronic gold receipts. Sequel Logistics currently operates a network of 23 vaults across the country.
