MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in key markets in Uttar Pradesh rose on firm demand in resale markets, traders said. Mills in Maharahtra kept prices steady because buying continued to be need-based, they said.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh raised prices by INR 20–INR 25 per 100 kg as traders began stocking up the pipeline on concern of prices rising further, Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India, said. In the first half of the month, demand was sluggish, but it has now started to pick up as the stocks in the pipeline have been exhausted, he said.

Moreover, with temperatures continuing to remain high in several states across the country, demand from ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers has remained strong. This is also supporting sugar prices, Gupta added.

In Maharashtra, mills kept prices steady as there was only need-based demand, Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association, said. Prices are high, which is why demand is only as per requirement, he said.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Up INR 20-INR 25 at INR 4,015-INR 4,150 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Up INR 20-INR 25 at INR 4,020 INR 4,165 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 4,072-INR 4,152 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,945-INR 3,960 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 2008 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was down 0.2% at 14.20 cents per pound, tracking a fall in the price of crude oil on NYMEX. Lower crude oil prices reduce the scope for diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, increasing the availability of sugar in the market.  End

US$1 = INR 94.71
