NEW DELHI – The government has raised the base import price of gold by $5 to $1,348 per 10 grams, according to a notification issued by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs Monday. The base import price of silver has been hiked by $83 to $2,175 per kilogram. The revised rates will come into effect Tuesday. The base import prices of both precious metals were last revised on Jun. 11.

The government typically revises base import prices of the two precious metals every fortnight. These prices are used to calculate the duty on gold and silver that individuals bring into the country. India is one of the world's biggest importers of silver and the second-largest consumer of gold. End
