NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of all spices traded on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange closed higher Monday. Turmeric contracts rose as fresh buying interest emerged at lower price levels. Jeera prices rose amid improved export demand and concern about reduced supply of premium-quality arrivals.
The most active August contract of TURMERIC was at INR 16,672 per 100 kilograms, up nearly 2% from the previous close. The contract rose more as "value-buying emerged at lower levels, helping prices rebound despite a sharp increase in market arrivals", SMC Global Securities said. The average weekly arrivals across major mandis stood at 13,366 tonnes, up by 276% compared to the corresponding period last year, reflecting ample near-term supplies, SMC Global said.
"Turmeric prices gained on short covering after prices dropped amid increased selling pressure from farmers," Kedia Advisory said. Turmeric prices were under pressure amid rising supplies and expectation of acreage expanding 5–8% to 317,000-320,000 hectares in the kharif season. "Progress and distribution of the southwest monsoon will be closely monitored, as rainfall conditions are expected to play a crucial role in overall crop prospects," SMC Global said.
The most-active June contract of JEERA rose 2% to INR 20,040 per 100 kg amid reduced availability of premium quality and bold seeds. "Buyers from Europe and North America have returned to the market, focusing primarily on residue-compliant and high-specification cumin lots," Kedia Advisory said.
Apart from renewed export demand, purchases to replenish inventories at relatively low prices are also supporting the market.
The most active August contract of CORIANDER rose over 2% to INR 13,546 per 100 kg. The contract rose amid robust demand from the domestic spice-processing industry, which outweighed the pressure from higher market arrivals and subdued export performance, SMC Global said.
