--Trade secy: India team in London to operationalise UK FTA
NEW DELHI – An Indian team is currently in London to discuss issues hindering the implementation of the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal said Monday.
"The Indian team is in London right now, trying to take forward these (trade agreement) discussions and see that we are able to operationalise the agreement," Agrawal told reporters. "So we are very close on all these issues and we hope there will be a resolution soon."
The implementation of the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, signed in July 2025, has been delayed by Britain's new curbs on steel imports. Starting Jul. 1, the UK will cut quotas on steel imports by 60% and raise duties outside those quotas to 50% in an effort to shield domestic steel producers. These curbs were not factored in when the trade agreement was being negotiated between India and the UK.
Under the trade deal, the UK has committed to tariff concessions on 99% of Indian goods exports to the country. New Delhi has also offered duty cuts on 90% tariff lines. End
