NEW DELHI – US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will visit India on Jun. 23-24 to discuss putting the "final touches" on the first tranche of the proposed trade agreement with India, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal said Monday.

"So it's a short visit," Agarwal told reporters. "Our expectation is that discussions will be centred around doing, giving final touches to the framework deal, which was discussed during the visit of their delegation in the first week of June. And also on the larger BTA (bilateral trade agreement) that has also been under discussion between the two sides."

A US team visited New Delhi in early June and held "constructive and positive discussions" with the Indian side on a wide range of issues, including merchandise trade and non-tariff measures and concluding the trade agreement. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Jun. 5 said he expects India and the US to close the first tranche of the proposed trade agreement by mid-July.

The two countries had on Feb. 7 issued a joint statement, agreeing on a framework for an interim agreement for mutually beneficial trade, but are yet to finalise the first phase of the trade agreement. The US was India's biggest trade partner in the financial year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), with total trade of $132.14 billion. India exported goods worth $86.51 billion to the US while importing $45.63 billion worth of goods from the world's largest economy.

In Apr-May, India's merchandise exports to the US rose to $17.29 billion from $17.21 billion a year ago. Goods imports from the US rose to $11.15 billion in Apr-May, up from $9.33 billion a year ago. Agarwal said India is importing higher liquefied petroleum gas from the US, which is pushing up overall goods imports from the world's largest economy.  End
