MUMBAI – Prices of tur and moong rose, while those of chana remained steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Tur and moong prices rose amid prospects of delay in kharif sowing due to a slowdown in the progress of the monsoon, they said. Chana prices were unchanged as low demand was on par with its low supply, they said.

 

CHANA prices in Delhi were steady at INR 6,000 per 100 kilograms, traders said. Prices were unchanged as demand and supply of chana are both low and equally matched, they said. Arrivals of the rabi crop have declined, while consumption demand for chana dal, or processed chana, and besan, or chana flour, remains low amid the hot weather, they said. Typically, demand for chana rises in June once the monsoon sets in. With the delayed progress of monsoon this year, demand is likely to remain low in the near term. However, this is unlikely to cause a significant fall in prices is unlikely as the market is likely to resist prices lower than the minimum support price of INR 5,875 per 100 kg, they said.

 

Prices of chana in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were unavailable as the market was shut for Somvati Amavasya, said Kailash Kakani, a local trader.

 

TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, rose by INR 100 per 100 kg to INR 7,400-INR 8,050 per 100 kg Monday, said Mukesh Sanklecha, a local trader. Around 24–25 trucks carrying 20,000–25,000 kg of tur each arrived in the market, he said. Prices rose due to concerns about delay in sowing of tur in the kharif season, he said. "By now, most of Maharashtra receives rainfall and farmers begin sowing tur, but there has not been a single cloud in the sky these days, so a delay in sowing is inevitable," he said. A delay in sowing often leads to less area being covered, which subsequently leads to lower production, he said. 

 

"If monsoon doesn't start in another week, prices will keep rising," Sanklecha said. The progress of the monsoon over the western coasts of the country has slowed down, and the trough has remained stalled in the same position since Jun. 8. According to weather officials, the trough is likely to stay put for at least one more week, which is likely to delay monsoon onset over many parts of Maharashtra. The strength of the monsoon flow is also weak, and it is unlikely to cause intense rainfall once it sets in, they said.

 

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 50 per 100 kg to INR 8,350-INR 8,450 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

 

MOONG prices in Jaipur, Rajasthan, rose by INR 100 per 100 kg to INR 6,400-INR 6,800 per 100 kg Monday, according to the association. Similar to tur, prices of moong have risen due to fears of delay in sowing and lower production due to the slow monsoon progress, Sanklecha said. Sowing of moong has not begun in major producing regions, which are mainly in north and central India, as the monsoon is yet to hit these regions, he said. Prices could rise further, supported by a significant decline in arrivals and a rise in need-based demand in the near term, he said.  End
