MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon trough advanced further into the eastern parts of the country, covering Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal entirely, and moving further over more parts of Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Bihar on Monday, the India Meteorological Department said. The monsoon trough remains stalled over west India in the same position as it was on Jun. 8, the weather department said. 

 

Currently, the monsoon trough passes through Harnai and Solapur in Maharashtra, Hyderabad and Bhadrachalam in Telangana, Koraput and Phulbani in Odisha, Ranchi in Jharkhand, and Muzaffarpur and Jamui in Bihar, the weather department said. Conditions are favourable for further advancement of the monsoon over more parts of Maharashtra, the remaining parts of Karnataka, Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Bihar, and some parts of Chhattisgarh in the next four to five days, the department said.

 

Under the influence of the monsoon trough, very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from Wednesday to Saturday, the weather bureau said. Heavy rainfall is also likely to persist over many parts of east India till Sunday, while thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 kilometres per hour are expected over parts of Bihar during the weekend, and over Odisha on Wednesday and Thursday, the bureau said.  

 

Very heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of Arunachal Pradesh from Thursday to Sunday, and over Assam and Meghalaya from Wednesday to Sunday, the department said. Heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is expected over multiple parts of northeast India till Saturday, it said.

 

In south India, heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from Tuesday to Thursday and over Kerala on Thursday, the weather bureau said. Strong surface winds are likely over parts of Andhra Pradesh till Friday, the bureau said. Most parts of south India are likely to record thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds till Sunday, the bureau said. Similar weather is also likely in most parts of west and central India during the same period, it said.

 

The presence of multiple weather systems over and near northwest India is likely to cause widespread thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in several parts of the region till Sunday, the weather department said. Hailstorms are expected over parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad on Thursday and Friday, the department said. In Rajasthan, dust storms are likely till Tuesday, while thundersqualls are expected till Thursday.

 

Heatwave conditions are expected over parts of Telangana till Tuesday and over Vidarbha till Wednesday, the weather bureau said. Hot and humid weather conditions are likely to persist in parts of Konkan, Goa, central Maharashtra, and Marathawada till Wednesday, while warm night conditions are expected in pockets of Konkan and Goa till Thursday, the bureau said.  End
