MUMBAI – The BRICS agriculture ministers' meeting ended in Indore Friday with the unanimous adoption of the "Indore Declaration", a framework aimed at strengthening food security, farmer welfare, climate-resilient agriculture, agricultural trade, and digital agriculture, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare said in a release Saturday. The declaration reflects the commitment of the BRICS grouping to address emerging challenges in agriculture through collaboration, innovation, and sustainable practices, the ministry said.

 

Among the key decisions, the BRICS members agreed to establish the BRICS Network of Centres of Excellence on Agro-Ecology and Regenerative Agriculture. The network will serve as a platform for joint research, knowledge sharing, and capacity building in natural, organic, and regenerative agriculture, enabling member countries to learn from each other's best practices and promote climate-resilient and sustainable farming systems. The Indian Institute of Farming Systems Research, Modipuram, would play a key role as India's Centre of Excellence under the network and contribute to collaborative research, knowledge sharing, and training, it said.

 

The second major initiative announced was the BRICS Network on Digital Agriculture. This will strengthen cooperation in artificial intelligence, geospatial technologies, digital public infrastructure, and data-driven agricultural solutions, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Minister for Agriculture, was quoted as saying in the release. The initiative will act as a bridge between emerging technologies and agricultural innovation, ensuring that technological advancements directly benefit farmers, Chouhan said.

 

The BRICS nations also agreed to establish a Global Forum on Farmers' Rights in Seed Systems to promote farmers' rights and preserve traditional knowledge linked to seed systems. The fourth initiative announced was BRICS AgriN or Agro Inputs, Genetic Resources, and Information Network. The platform aims to strengthen cooperation among member countries in agricultural inputs, seeds, and genetic resources, as per the release. 

 

Among other discussions at the meeting, the countries agreed to strengthen existing platforms, focus on agricultural trade, highlight climate change, carbon credits, and food loss, along with fertiliser prices, inputs and support to farmers, according to the release.
