MUMBAI/NEW DELHI – In Maharashtra, mills kept prices largely unchanged from Thursday as demand and supply remained on a par. Although demand from bulk buyers was limited at prevailing rates, mills did not slash prices to attract more buyers.

"There is no selling pressure in the market. Demand and supply are largely maintained," said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. "Prices will probably remain flat for next week as well," he added.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady after raising prices the previous day, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from Uttar Pradesh. Mills want demand to pick up at the current levels, hence, they kept prices steady, he added.

Demand has been sluggish so far in the month with the monsoon setting in over the southern parts of the country and pre-monsoon showers elsewhere, limiting demand for the sweetener from ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers, Gupta said.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Flat at INR 4,000-INR 4,120 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 4,010 INR 4,135 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 4,072-INR 4,152 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,945-INR 3,960 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1900 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was up 1.2% at 13.96 cents per pound on conern about falling output due to the emerging El Nino conditions.  End

US$1 = INR 95.11
