FCI wheat stocks on Jun 1 up 45% on year, rice at record high since 1998

MUMBAI – Rice stocks with Food Corp. of India as of Jun. 1 rose to a record high of 39.6 million tonnes, up nearly 2% from 39 million tonnes a month ago and up over 4% from 38 million tonnes a year ago, data from the corporation showed. Wheat stocks as on Jun. 1 rose to 53.4 million tonnes from 42.8 million tonnes a month ago, a rise of nearly 25%. They were also up by a hefty 45% from 36.9 million tonnes a year ago.

 

The current wheat stocks are significantly above the buffer norms for the current quarter. According to norms, minimum wheat stocks for Apr-Jun should be nearly 7.5 million tonnes, which includes an operational stock of 4.46 million tonnes and a strategic reserve of 3.0 million tonnes. The government sets the buffer requirement of food grains for every quarter and FCI has to maintain the mandated level.

 

Current rice stocks are at a record high since 1998, surpassing the previous high seen last month.

 

The current rice stocks are far above the buffer norm of about 13.6 million tonnes, including operational stock of 11.58 million tonnes and strategic reserve of 2.00 million tonnes.

 

The total stock of foodgrains with the FCI on Jun. 1 was at 93.0 million tonnes, up from 81.8 million tonnes a month ago and 74.9 million tonnes a year ago. The FCI also had a stock of 42.8 million tonnes of unmilled rice (paddy) and 899,000 tonnes of coarse grains as of Jun. 1.  End
