MUMBAI – The US Department of Agriculture has projected global cotton production in 2026-27 (Aug-Jul) at 116.04 million bales (1 bale = 170 kilograms), unchanged from the estimates projected in May, it said in the June edition of its World Agriculture Supply and Demand Estimates report.
World cotton consumption in 2026-27 is projected to rise marginally to 121.76 million bales from 121.69 million bales projected last month. The rise in consumption is driven by increased demand from China despite declines in Bangladesh, Pakistan, and South Korea, the report said. The department has marginally lowered its estimate for global cotton exports in 2026-27 to 43.32 million bales from 43.34 million bales the previous month.
The department has lowered its projection of world cotton beginning stocks to 76.63 million bales from the earlier estimate of 77.27 million bales. The department has lowered its projection of world cotton ending stocks to 71.13 million bales from 71.84 million bales projected in May.
The agency has projected India's cotton production during 2026–27 at 24.0 million bales, unchanged from the estimates projected in May. The estimate for cotton consumption is also unchanged at 26.00 million bales. It has also kept its projection of India's export of cotton unchanged at 1.50 million bales.
As per the report, India is projected to import 2.50 million bales of cotton in 2026-27, up from 2.0 million bales projected last month. The opening stocks in India for 2026-27 are projected at 11.12 million bales, up from 11.02 million bales seen in May, while closing stocks are pegged at 10.12 million bales, up from 9.52 million bales forecast last month.
