MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in key markets of Uttar Pradesh rose as demand improved after mills cut prices over the past few days, traders said. Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady as demand was limited, they said.
Mills in Uttar Pradesh raised prices by INR 20–INR 30 per kg as demand improved, Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India, said. Since the start of the month, sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh have lowered prices by INR 70-INR 80 per 100 kg as demand had been only need-based, Gupta said.
Demand has been sluggish so far in the month with the monsoon setting in over the southern parts of the country and pre-monsoon showers elsewhere, limiting demand for the sweetener from ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers, Gupta said. However, with prices being lowered and stocks in traders' pipelines almost exhausted, demand has started to pick up again, he added.
In Maharashtra, mills kept prices steady as there was only need-based demand, Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association, said. Prices are high, which is why demand is only as per requirement, he said.
Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Up INR 20-INR 30 at INR 4,000-INR 4,120 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Up INR 20-INR 30 at INR 4,010 INR 4,135 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 4,072-INR 4,152 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,945-INR 3,960 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1708 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was down 0.6% from Wednesday at 13.84 cents per pound, tracking a fall in the price of crude oil on NYMEX. Lower crude oil prices reduce the scope for diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, increasing the availability of sugar. End
