MUMBAI – Grain prices were steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Wheat prices are expected to fall in the near term as demand is likely to remain muted amid ample supplies, they said. Maize prices could rise steadily due to prospects of higher demand from the ethanol sector, while rice prices could remain unchanged due to tepid demand in both domestic and export markets, they said.

 

WHEAT price in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, was steady at INR 2,570 per 100 kilograms, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Price is steady as demand and supply of wheat are largely unchanged, he said. "Market sentiment is low," he said. Prices are likely to fall in the near term as demand is likely to remain sluggish amid comfortable supplies, he said.

 

Wheat currently arriving is mostly of average to low quality, said Dinesh Mangal, a local trader from Indore. "Around 30% of the crop this year was of good quality, while the rest was average to low. Most of the good quality crop has been purchased by traders, and they have enough stock to last for the next few months," he said. Currently, there is only need-based demand for wheat, and with ample supplies of the grain, prices could fall by INR 200-INR 300 per 100 kg in the near term, he said.

 

Wheat prices in Kota, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 2,275-INR 2,300 per 100 kg, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals fell by 10,000 bags to 25,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. The price is unchanged due to low market activity, he said. "Not many people are interested in buying wheat right now, so it doesn't matter that arrivals are down. There should be ample demand in the first place to push prices up," he said.

 

Wheat price at Vashi in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, was steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader.

 

The price of MAIZE in Indore was steady at INR 2,175 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices are likely to climb steadily in the near term as the market expects demand from the ethanol sector to rise, he said. Prices of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka, were steady at INR 1,800-INR 2,050 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 800 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said.

 

Prices of RICE varieties were steady in Vashi, Vora said. Prices of the 1409 and 1509 varieties of basmati rice were steady at INR 9,400-INR 9,500 per 100 kg and INR 8,200-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, he said. Prices of the 1121 variety of basmati rice were also steady at INR 10,000–INR 10,200 per 100 kg, he said. Prices are steady amid tepid demand in both the domestic and foreign markets, he said. "Chances of demand for basmati rising in domestic markets are next to nothing, while export demand is also slow because of the ongoing Strait of Hormuz situation," he said. The Strait of Hormuz has been largely shut since Feb. 28 after a war broke out in West Asia.  End
