MUMBAI – The Southwest monsoon is likely to hit Mumbai on Monday, with a margin error of plus or minus one day, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. This marks a departure by four days from the normal onset date of Jun. 11, the weather agency said. The advancement of the monsoon trough over the city is unlikely to cause heavy showers due to the absence of other favourable weather systems over and near the region, the weather agency said.
The monsoon trough, which hit Kerala on Jun. 4, three days after its usual date of Jun. 1, advanced rapidly along the western coast of the country. The trough hit the Konkan Coast a day before the usual date. Under the influence of the monsoon trough and an east-west trough extending from a cyclonic circulation over the east central Arabian Sea, heavy rainfall has been recorded over south Konkan in the last two days, the weather agency said.
However, the east-west trough has begun to weaken, and as such, rainfall is expected to be confined to south Konkan, predominantly over Goa and coastal Karnataka for the next three days. Rainfall over north Konkan, including Mumbai, is expected to remain minimal as this weather pattern will remain confined to south Konkan for the next four to five days, the agency said.
A lower-level cyclonic circulation is likely to form over the Arabian Sea, off the coasts of Goa and south Konkan on Saturday, the weather agency said. This weather system will shift closer to the coastline on Sunday, which is likely to cause light to moderate rainfall over Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Raigad, Alibag, Mumbai, and Palghar between Sunday and Tuesday, the agency said.
In 2025, the Southwest monsoon hit the Kerala coast on May 24, eight days ahead of its usual date. The monsoon trough advanced rapidly over south India and hit Mumbai on May 26, 16 days before its normal onset date, which is the earliest ever on record. End
