MUMBAI – The iCOMDEX Composite index of the Multi Commodity Exchange of India traded lower Thursday. After opening unchanged at 23994.22, it came down and traded at 23954.18 points at 1111 IST.

All the three components of the Composite index were down from the previous close. The bullion index traded 0.5% lower as gold declined 0.5% and silver fell 0.7% from the previous close. Bullion prices fell amid renewed conflict in West Asia, which is fuelling concerns about inflation and interest rate hikes. The US military confirmed it launched a new wave of strikes on several Iranian targets Wednesday, just hours after President Donald Trump warned of further attacks if a peace agreement wasn't reached. Prices also fell as market participants are expecting an interest rate hike by the US Federal Reserve by the end of this year. Typically, higher interest rates reduce the appeal of the non-interest-bearing precious metal.

The energy index traded 0.4% lower, with crude oil trading 0.13% higher and natural gas 0.3% lower. The base metal index was down 0.1%, with copper down 0.2% and zinc declining 0.2%. Lead was down 0.1% and aluminium fell 0.2%.

The MCX iCOMDEX comprises a series of real-time commodity futures price indices and tracks the performance of a basket of commodity futures. It serves as a benchmark for market movements in bullion, base metals, and energy.  End
