Govt says adequate urea available in Punjab for ongoing kharif season

NEW DELHI – Farmers in Punjab have adequate urea availability or 74% of the stock required in the ongoing kharif season, according to the fertiliser ministry. Against the kharif requirement of 1.45 million tonnes of urea, the state has a supply of 1.07 million tonnes, the fertiliser ministry said in a release. The pro-rata urea demand up to Tuesday was 900,000 tonnes.
Against the supplies, actual urea sales in Punjab were 625,000 tonnes, leaving a substantial stock of 446,000 tonnes immediately available on the ground. "Furthermore, an additional quantity of 39,167 tonnes of urea is currently in transit to Punjab," the ministry said.
Paddy transplantation is yet to fully commence in the state, making the current stocks sufficient to meet emerging field requirements, the ministry said. Paddy is the largest kharif crop.
The fertiliser supply chain has been navigating volatile prices and supply disruptions amid the ongoing US-Iran war. To ensure comfortable supplies, the government has asked fertiliser manufacturing and importing companies to remain agile and respond immediately to any emerging issues in states. End
