NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of most spices traded on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange closed higher Wednesday. Jeera prices fell slightly as large buyers increasingly resorted to hand-to-mouth buying amid ample stocks in the markets.
The most-active June contract of JEERA fell 0.3% to INR 19,130 per 100 kilograms. The contract fell slightly because demand was limited to meeting immediate requirements amid ample supplies in the markets, which weighed on prices. The average monthly arrivals in May across major markets were 124% higher at 71,694 tonnes, SMC Global Securities said.
The contract ended down Wednesday after rising for four straight sessions. Jeera prices may remain firm with "minor correction" and hover between INR 19,090 and INR 19,790 per 100 kg, supported by improved buying interest at lower prices, SMC Global added.
The most active June contract of TURMERIC rose 0.2% to INR 15,670 per 100 kg. Turmeric prices rose slightly amid sustained demand at prevailing rates. However, gains were limited amid ample supplies and expectations of increased sowing in the kharif season. According to market estimates, turmeric acreage is likely to expand 5–8% to 317,000-320,000 hectares as prices for the rhizome are currently remunerative.
The most-active June contract of CORIANDER rose 0.2% to INR 12,740 per 100 kg. "Coriander futures is predicted to move sideways in INR 13,030–INR 13,170 range before moving either side," SMC Global said. Though weak export demand at prevailing rates is likely to cap the rise, declining arrivals in major markets are expected to provide support to prices, it added.
