MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh fell as demand was subdued at earlier levels, traders said. Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady, they said.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh cut prices by INR 10–INR 25 per 100 kg as demand was sluggish at higher rates, Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India said. After cutting prices, demand has improved, he said.

Since the start of the month, mills have cut prices by INR 70-INR 80 per 100 kg as demand has been need-based, Gupta said. Owing to the onset of the monsoon, there is limited demand for the sweetener from bulk consumers such as ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers, which weighed on prices, Gupta added.

In Maharashtra, mills kept prices steady due to need-based demand, Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association, said. Prices are high, which is why demand is as per requirement, he added.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Down INR 10-INR 25 at INR 3,970-INR 4,085 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Down INR 10-INR 25 at INR 3,990-INR 4,100 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 4,072-INR 4,152 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,945-INR 3,960 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1729 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were down nearly 1% at 14.08 cents per pound. The International Sugar Organization has forecast a record global sugar crop for the 2025-26 season and raised its global surplus estimate, which weighed on prices.  End

US$1 = INR 95.27
