MUMBAI – Prices of chana and urad were steady, while prices of tur rose in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Tur prices rose amid a rise in need-based demand from millers and traders, they said. Chana prices could rise in the medium term due to higher demand during the monsoon and festivals, they said. Urad prices could remain range-bound in the near term amid steady arrivals and low imports, they said.
CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,075-INR 6,100 per 100 kilgrams, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices have remained largely steady in the past few days, fluctuating in a narrow range of INR 25-INR 50 per 100 kg, depending on the need-based demand from traders and millers, he said. Arrivals of chana are slightly higher as farmers are still offloading stocks to finance the purchase of fertilisers, seeds, and other equipment for the kharif sowing season, he said. Kharif sowing is yet to begin in Madhya Pradesh as the monsoon has not set in over the state yet, he said. Typically, the monsoon advances over the state on Jun. 15, covering most of the region till Jun. 20.
In the medium term, prices are expected to rise due to higher demand during monsoon and for the upcoming festival season, Kochar said. "By then, stocks of the crop with farmers will reduce, and only the government will have substantial inventories to offload in the market. Prices could climb to INR 7,000 per 100 kg," he said.
Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,950-INR 5,975 per 100 kg, traders said.
TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, rose by INR 50 per 100 kg to INR 7,950-INR 7,975 per 100 kg Wednesday, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Prices rose amid a rise in need-based demand from millers and traders, he said. Prices also rose tracking a rise in prices of imports from Myanmar, he said.
Sowing of tur is yet to begin in Maharashtra, Kedia said. Typically, the sowing window in key-growing regions such as Vidarbha in the state is in the second half of June, he said. "Sowing is not delayed this year because monsoon onset is a bit late in Maharashtra, it's just that last year sowing started early because monsoon set in over the state in the end of May," he said. Sowing of tur in the state is unlikely to be impacted by forecasts of below normal rainfall during the monsoon this year, as tur is less reliant on water, he said. "As long as there are spells of continuous showers every 10–15 days, the tur crop will remain healthy," he said.
Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 50 per 100 kg to INR 8,100-INR 8,200 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
URAD prices at Chandausi in Uttar Pradesh were steady at INR 8,125-INR 8,150 per 100 kg, traders said. Prices of urad in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were also steady at INR 7,400-INR 8,400 per 100 kg, they said. Prices were unchanged amid lack of fresh cues, they said.
Urad prices are likely to move in a narrow range in the near term amid steady arrivals of the summer crop and low demand, the association said in its weekly report on Monday. A downside in prices is unlikely due to support from the government's procurement, low stocks of imports at ports, and slow imports due to negative price parity, the association said. Demand may also improve once the monsoon commences in full swing. End
