MUMBAI – Prices of maize and rice were steady, while those of wheat were mixed in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Wheat prices in Kota, Rajasthan, fell due to muted demand amid elevated arrivals, but were steady in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, they said. Maize prices are expected to rise in the near term due to anticipated higher demand for ethanol, while rice prices could remain steady due to low market activity, they said.
WHEAT prices in Kota fell by INR 25 per 100 kilograms to INR 2,275-INR 2,300 per 100 kg Wednesday, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 25,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices fell for the second consecutive day amid elevated arrivals and sluggish demand, he said. Arrivals have risen slightly across markets as farmers are attempting to offload as much of the crop as they can to finance their expenses for the kharif sowing season, he said. Prices are also weighed down by the anticipated government sale, he said. "Once the government issues tenders for selling their wheat stocks, prices may go down further," he said.
The government has allocated 21.9 million tonnes of wheat for sale and distribution in 2026–27 (Apr-Mar). "This amount is much higher than the allocation last year, so once this supply of wheat enters the market, prices will be under pressure," Mehta said. The government is yet to allocate the amount of wheat it will offload in the open-market sales scheme, he said.
Prices of wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 2,570 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices were unchanged amid steady demand, he said. Though arrivals of wheat remain on the higher side as farmers look to earn money for their kharif expenses, regular need-based demand from millers and traders is keeping prices from falling, he said.
Wheat prices at Vashi in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader. Prices were supported by government procurement amid low market activity, he said.
The price of MAIZE in Indore was unchanged at INR 2,175 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices were steady as both demand and supply remained largely unchanged from Tuesday, he said. There is steady demand for the coarse grain for livestock feed and from the ethanol sector, he said. Maize prices are expected to rise in the near term as demand for it as an ethanol feedstock is likely to increase, he said.
The government is likely to gradually raise ethanol blending in petrol to 25% from 20%, followed by the expansion of infrastructure for dispensing E85 or E100 for use in flex-fuel vehicles, Tarun Kapoor, advisor to the Prime Minister, said last week. India has been implementing the ethanol blending programme in petrol to reduce dependence on crude oil imports, save foreign exchange, and promote green mobility.
Prices of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka, were steady at INR 1,800-INR 2,050 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 800 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said.
Prices of RICE varieties were steady in Vashi, Vora said. Prices of the 1409 and 1509 varieties of basmati rice were steady at INR 9,400-INR 9,500 per 100 kg and INR 8,200-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, he said. Prices of the 1121 variety of basmati rice were also steady at INR 10,000–INR 10,200 per 100 kg, he said. "There is not much happening in rice. Only a few people are buying and selling," he said. End
