MUMBAI – The area sown under kharif crops in Gujarat reached 173,486 hectares as of Monday, up more than 125% from 77,067 hectares covered in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state's agriculture department. The normal acreage for the season is 8.53 million hectares, of which 2% has been covered so far. 

 

Paddy acreage in the state was up at 571 hectares from 7 hectares covered a year ago, the report showed. The area sown under maize also rose to 317 hectares from 46 hectares last year, and that of jowar was 321 hectares, up from 41 hectares a year ago.

 

The acreage under tur rose to 115 hectares from 60 hectares last year, according to the report. Moong acreage was marginally up at 48 hectares from 45 hectares a year ago, and that of urad was 13 hectares, up from 6 hectares last year. The total acreage under all pulses as of Monday was 180 hectares, up from 111 hectares a year ago.

 

The total area sown under all oilseeds so far was 55,194 hectares, up from 31,225 hectares in the previous year, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage under groundnut rose to 54,788 hectares from 31,110 hectares last year.

 

Cotton acreage in the state jumped to 93,449 hectares from 34,011 hectares from a year ago, according to the report. The area sown under vegetables also rose to 10,353 hectares from 5,144 hectares last year.

 

Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the Southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. From Jun. 1-9, Gujarat recorded 6.2 millimetres of rainfall, 51?low the normal for the period, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. The Southwest monsoon is yet to advance over Gujarat as of Tuesday. The normal date for monsoon onset over the state is Jun. 15.  End
