MUMBAI – The sowing of kharif crops for the crop year 2025-26 (Jul-Jun) commenced across the country on Friday, with 7.26 million hectares covered so far, down nearly 3% from 7.46 million hectares sown in the same period last year, data from the agriculture ministry showed. The acreage under paddy and pulses rose on-year, while those under coarse cereals and oilseeds, and cotton fell, the data showed.
The area sown under paddy as of Friday was 285,000 hectares, up nearly 8% from the previous year, according to the data. Paddy is the largest grain sown during the season, both in terms of acreage and production.
The acreage under coarse cereals, promoted as 'Shri Anna' by the government, was down over 17% on year at 101,000 hectares. Under coarse cereals, acreage under maize rose to 38,000 hectares from 27,000 hectares a year ago, while that of jowar fell sharply to 3,000 hectares from 26,000 hectares last year. The acreage under bajra doubled from last year to 2,000 hectares.
The total area sown so far under pulses was 52,000 hectares, up nearly 49% on year, the data showed. Tur acreage was up at 5,000 hectares from 3,000 hectares a year ago, and that of urad also rose to 10,000 hectares from 6,000 hectares last year. The acreage under moong slipped nearly 12% to 15,000 hectares.
The total acreage under oilseeds as of Friday was 42,000 hectares, down more than 19% from last year, according to the data. Under oilseeds, the acreage under soybean was 19,000 hectares, up from 17,000 hectares a year ago. Groundnut acreage fell to 5,000 hectares from 9,000 hectares last year, and that of sunflower was also down at 11,000 hectares from 13,000 hectares in the previous year.
Sugarcane acreage across the country was unchanged at 5.41 million hectares from the previous year, the data showed. The area sown under jute rose to 618,000 hectares from 608,000 hectares a year ago, while that of cotton fell nearly 23% on year to 751,000 hectares.
The southwest monsoon hit Kerala on Thursday, three days post its normal date of Jun. 1, though it could not be termed as "delayed" as the onset was within the error margin of plus or minus seven days. The monsoon trough has advanced rapidly over parts of south India, covering Kerala entirely, and most parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu as of Monday. Farmers are monitoring the progress of the southwest monsoon this year due to forecasts of below-normal rainfall during the season amid the onset of El Nino, which could impact kharif crops.
