MUMBAI – The iCOMDEX Composite index of the Multi Commodity Exchange of India traded lower Tuesday, dragged down by a fall in all the three component indices. The Composite index opened marginally lower at 24811.32 points against Monday's close of 24813.99 points. At 1103 IST, the index was down 0.2% at 24756.00 points.
Among the three components of the Composite index, the bullion index traded 0.2% lower, as gold declined 0.1% and silver 0.6% from the previous day's closing. However, the bullion index was moving between gains and losses in a volatile trade. Bullion prices opened lower due to rising Treasury yields. Yields on the benchmark 10-year US Treasury note were at a two-week-high, increasing the opportunity cost of holding gold. Prices also fell due to a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Iran. On Monday, Iran and Israel said they had halted attacks on each other after an appeal from US President Donald Trump, though Tehran warned it would resume hostilities if Israel continued to hit Hezbollah in Lebanon.
The energy index was down, with crude oil trading 0.8% lower and natural gas trading 0.8% higher. Also down 0.3% was the base metal index, pulled down by copper, which was down 0.1%, and also zinc, which was down 0.3%. Lead was down 0.1% and aluminium was down 0.3%.
The MCX iCOMDEX comprises a series of real-time commodity futures price indices and tracks the performance of a basket of commodity futures. It serves as a benchmark for market movements in bullion, base metals, and energy. End
