NEW DELHI – A commercial cargo vessel with 24 Indian nationals on board caught fire on Monday off the coast of Oman, a government official said. All on board are safe, the official said, adding that authorities are still ascertaining the cause of the fire. 

 

"The vessel was well out of the Strait of Hormuz and well cleared south," the official said. "The fire incident is at 1:30 (1330 IST) today. So, we are in touch with the owners. We are trying to ascertain the facts," a shipping ministry official said at a media briefing on developments related to the West Asia crisis. 

 

The cargo vessel named MARIVEX is an oil tanker, but was in a "ballast condition", carrying no cargo, the official said. "With respect to the Red Sea, presently we have not received any information of any attack or anything by Houthis," he added.

 

On cooking gas prices, the government said the cost of supplying a 14.2 kg of liquefied petroleum gas cylinder has risen to over INR 1,600, and the under-recovery absorbed on each cylinder is now about INR 700.

 

In 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), the under-recoveries on domestic LPG rose to INR 600 billion from INR 413.38 billion the previous year. Under recoveries are borne by the public sector marketing companies and the exchequer, against which the Cabinet has approved INR 300 billion as compensation. 

 

"The effective Ujjwala price of the first 4 cylinders at INR 642 is at a discount of about 60% to the actual international price of an LPG cylinder, and the non-PMUY price of INR 942 is at a discount of about 45% to the international price," the government said in a release Sunday. 

 

"Given the fact that average consumption is 4 to 5 cylinders a year per PMUY (Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana) connection, there has been a cap of INR 300 per cylinder, which is the subsidy given as the DBT  (direct benefit transfer) to these PMUY customers. It's capped at 4 cylinders now, first 4 cylinders," a petroleum ministry official said. End
