MUMBAI – Prices of chana and moong were steady, while prices of tur showed mixed trend in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Tur prices fell in some markets amid low demand and steady arrivals, they said. Chana and moong prices are expected to remain range-bound till monsoon begins in full swing, after which demand is likely to increase, they said. 

 

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,075-INR 6,100 per 100 kilograms, said Kailash Kakani, a local trader. Prices have been in a narrow range over the past few days, fluctuating by INR 50-INR 100 per 100 kg, he said. With demand largely tepid, prices are taking cues from arrivals, he said. Arrivals of the crop increased in the past week as farmers are looking to finance their expenses for the upcoming kharif sowing season, he said. "Farmers are bringing their stock to the market according to their need for money," he said. 

 

Demand is expected to remain sluggish till monsoon begins in full swing over the country, Kakani said. Demand for chana dal, or processed chana, and besan, or chana flour, increased during monsoon, he said. However, a steep fall in prices is unlikely even if demand remains muted, as farmers are expected to resist prices below the minimum support price of INR 5,875 per 100 kg, he said.

 

Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,975-INR 6,000 per 100 kg, traders said.

 

TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, fell by INR 50 to INR 7,400-INR 7,900 per 100 kg Monday, said Mukesh Sanklecha, a local trader. About 17–18 trucks, each carrying 20,000–25,000 kg of tur arrived in Solapur, he said. Prices fell due to a slowdown in demand amid steady arrivals, he said. "Consumption demand for tur dal, or processed tur, is low, so prices are down," he said. The market is receiving steady arrivals of tur, though they have declined considerably from the season's peak of 70–80 trucks per day, he said.

 

Sowing of tur in Maharashtra is likely to begin once monsoon begins in full swing in the state, Sanklecha said. Forecasts of below-normal rainfall during the season are unlikely to have a significant effect on tur sowing, he said. "A proper estimate of acreage can only be given once monsoon begins, but I don't think acreage this year will see much of a difference (when compared to last year)," he said.

 

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 8,150-INR 8,250 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

 

MOONG prices in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 6,300-INR 6,700 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices were unchanged as low demand for moong was on a par with its low supply, Sanklecha said. Arrivals of the summer crop have ended, and currently markets are only receiving some stocks storied in warehouses, he said. In the near term, prices of moong are likely to increase due to a rise in demand while arrivals remain low, he said. "In July, demand for all pulses increases as consumption shifts from mangoes and back to dal during monsoon," he said. During summer, or the mango season, the consumption of raw and ripe mangoes in daily meals weighs over the consumption of pulses, he said.  End
