MUMBAI – Prices of maize and rice were unchanged, while prices of wheat showed mixed trends in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were weighed down by muted demand amid high arrivals, they said. Maize prices are expected to rise in the near term due to prospects of higher demand from the ethanol sector, while rice prices could remain range-bound amid low market activity, they said.
WHEAT prices in Indore fell by INR 10 per 100 kilograms to INR 2,570 per 100 kg Monday, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices fell due to a slowdown in demand amid elevated arrivals, he said. Demand is largely need-based, fluctuating day-by-day depending on the immediate needs of traders and millers, he said. Arrivals are slightly higher as farmers continue to offload their stocks, looking to earn enough cash to purchase sowing supplies such as fertilisers and seeds ahead of the kharif season, he said.
Arrivals are likely to remain elevated till sowing begins in the state, after which farmers will be busy tending fields, Kochar said. Kharif sowing is yet to begin in Madhya Pradesh as monsoon has not advanced over the state yet, he said.
Prices of wheat in Kota, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 2,300-INR 2,335 per 100 kg, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 15,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), he said. Prices are unchanged amid some need-based demand from millers, he said. "Millers need to process wheat every day or what else are they open for? They keep buying small amounts every day to fulfil immediate needs, even if overall demand is low," he said.
Prices of wheat at the Vashi market in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader. Prices were supported by government procurement amid low market activity, he said.
The price of MAIZE in Indore was unchanged at INR 2,175 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices are steady as demand for the grain has risen in pace with the rise in arrivals, he said. Similar to wheat, arrivals of maize have increased as farmers look to empty out stocks before kharif sowing begins, he said. In the near term, prices are expected to rise due to a rise in demand from the ethanol sector amid a push for higher ethanol blending in the country, he said.
The government is likely to gradually raise ethanol blending in petrol to 25% from 20%, followed by expanding infrastructure for dispensing E85 or E100 that can be used in flex fuel vehicles, Tarun Kapoor, advisor to the Prime Minister, said on Friday. India has been implementing the ethanol blending programme in petrol to reduce crude oil import dependency, save foreign exchange, and promote green mobility.
Prices of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka, were steady at INR 1,800-INR 2,050 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 800 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said.
Prices of RICE varieties were steady in Vashi, Vora said. Prices of the 1409 and 1509 varieties of basmati rice were steady at INR 9,400-INR 9,500 per 100 kg and INR 8,200-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, he said. Prices of the 1121 variety of basmati rice were also steady at INR 10,000–INR 10,200 per 100 kg, he said. Prices are steady amid low market activity, he said. Both demand and supply of the grain is limited, he said. Demand could rise in the near term once the festival season begins, though a substantial rise in prices is unlikely as many domestic buyers have already stocked up on the grain, he said. End
