MUMBAI – Under the influence of the southwest monsoon trough, extremely heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Karnataka till Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department said, issuing a red alert for this. The weather department also issued a red alert for extremely heavy rain over Kerala on Tuesday. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

 

The weather bureau has forecast widespread weather activity over south peninsula India, with heavy to very heavy rainfall likely over several parts of the region for the next seven days. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are also expected over these parts till Friday, the bureau said. 

 

The southwest monsoon advanced over more parts of the Arabian Sea, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, and some parts of Telangana on Monday, the weather bureau said. Currently, the monsoon trough passes through Harnai and Solapur in Maharashtra, Kalaburagi in Karnataka, Nandyal in Andhra Pradesh, Chennai in Tamil Nadu, Kailashahar in Tripura, Lamding in Manipur, and North Lakhimpur in Assam. Conditions are favourable for the trough's further movement over the rest of Tamil Nadu and northeast India, more parts of the Arabian Sea, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh, and some parts of Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal, and Sikkim in the next two to three days, the bureau said.

 

Very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till Tuesday, while heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over most parts of east India till Sunday. Thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 kilometres per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are also likely over multiple parts of east India till Friday, the bureau said.

 

In northeast India, very heavy showers are likely over parts of Arunachal Pradesh from Tuesday to Sunday and over Assam and Meghalaya till Sunday, the weather department said. Heavy rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over most parts of northeast India till Friday, the department said.

 

Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over parts of Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra till Wednesday, the weather bureau said. In central India, thundersqualls are expected over parts of Chhattisgarh on Thursday and Friday, while thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are seen in parts of Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh till Friday.

 

In northwest India, thundersqualls along with hailstorms are likely in several parts of the region till Friday, the weather department said. Dust storms are expected in parts of west Rajasthan on Thursday and Friday, the department said. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely in multiple parts of northwest India till Sunday.

 

Heatwave conditions are expected in parts of northwest India and central India till Thursday, the weather bureau said. Hot and humid weather conditions are likely to prevail in pockets of Odisha till Thursday and in Konkan, Goa, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry till Tuesday, the bureau said.  End
