MUMBAI – Prices of maize and rice were unchanged, while prices of wheat showed mixed trends in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Wheat prices in Kota, Rajasthan, fell as demand slowed down while arrivals remained steady, they said. Maize prices are expected to rise in the near term due to prospects of higher demand for ethanol and lower kharif acreage, they said. Rice prices could remain steady amid a lack of new cues, they said.
WHEAT prices in Kota fell by INR 75 per 100 kilograms to INR 2,300-INR 2,335 per 100 kg Friday, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 15,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), he said. Prices are down amid low demand and steady arrivals, he said. "Prices keep changing in small amounts every day depending on how much demand there is. It is regular market activity. If prices change by INR 100 per 100 kg or more, then we can say something significant has happened in the market," he said.
Prices are expected to remain largely range-bound in the near term, Mehta said. In the near term, the movement in prices is likely to depend on when the government begins the open-market sales scheme and the reserve price it sets, he said. Under the open market sales scheme, the government fixes the prices of rice and wheat and sells the grains to bulk buyers, such as states and private millers, through electronic auctions. The government's weekly e-auctions of rice and wheat are meant to cool retail prices nationwide.
Prices of wheat in Indore, Mahdya Pradesh, were steady at INR 2,580 per 100 kg Thursday, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices are steady amid stable demand, he said. Prices are likely to remain steady to weak in the near term as the government's procurement operations in Madhya Pradesh have largely been wrapped up, he said.
Madhya Pradesh stands out this season as the entire quantity of wheat procured so far in the state met the fair-average quality norms. The state has so far procured 10.4 million tonnes of wheat, up 34% on year. The state largely escaped widespread crop damage from untimely rainfall, but farmers delayed crop harvesting due to high temperatures during the grain-filling stage.
The price of wheat in Vashi was steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader. Prices were supported by government procurement amid low market activity, he said.
The price of MAIZE in Indore was unchanged at INR 2,175 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices are steady as demand for the coarse grain is on par with its supply, he said. Though arrivals have increased as farmers are looking to offload their stocks to finance their expenses for the kharif season, demand has also matched pace, keeping prices unchanged, he said. Prices are likely to rise in the near term as demand from the ethanol sector is expected to rise amid prospects of a lower kharif acreage this year, he said.
Prices of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka, were steady at INR 1,800-INR 2,050 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 800 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said.
Prices of RICE varieties were steady in Vashi, Vora said. Prices of the 1409 and 1509 varieties of basmati rice were steady at INR 9,400-INR 9,500 per 100 kg and INR 8,200-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, he said. Prices of the 1121 variety of basmati rice were also steady at INR 10,000 – INR 10,200 per 100 kg, he said. Prices were unchanged due to the absence of fresh cues in the market, he said. "Demand has settled, so the market has also settled, so there are no changes in prices for now," he said. End
