MUMBAI – The presence and movement of the monsoon trough is likely to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry till Sunday and over parts of coastal Karnataka till Thursday, the India Meteorological Department said. Heavy to very heavy rainfall with a few instances of extremely heavy rainfall, accompanied by strong surface winds, is expected over parts of Kerala over the weekend, for which the weather department has issued a red alert. Heavy rainfall is likely to persist in the state till Thursday, the department said.

Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over many parts of south peninsular India till Thursday, the weather bureau said.

The southwest monsoon advanced further into some more parts of the Arabian Sea, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, Friday, the weather department said. Currently, the monsoon trough passes through Panjim in Goa, Bengaluru in Karnataka, and Salem and Pamban in Tamil Nadu, the department said. Conditions are favourable for the trough to move further over some more parts of Karnataka, the remaining parts of Goa, Tamil Nadu, and southeast Bay of Bengal, and some parts of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and the northeastern states.

Heavy rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is expected over many parts of northeast India till Thursday, the weather bureau said. Very heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of Andhra Pradesh from Sunday to Thursday, and over Assam and Meghalaya from Saturday to Thursday, the bureau said.

In east India, heavy rainfall is likely over parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Saturday and from Monday to Wednesday. Similar weather is expected over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till Sunday and from Tuesday to Thursday, with a few spells of very heavy rainfall Monday, the weather bureau said. Thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 kilometres per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are expected over many parts of east India till Wednesday, the bureau said.

Heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra till Tuesday, the weather department said. Light to moderate showers with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over several parts of western India till Thursday, the department said. In central India, thundersqualls are likely over parts of west Madhya Pradesh till Saturday and over Chhattisgarh over the weekend.

The presence of several weather systems above and near northwest India is expected to cause thundersqualls over parts of Rajasthan till Saturday, the bureau said. Moderate to severe thunderstorms with wind speeds reaching 50–60 km per hour are likely over multiple parts of northwest India till Thursday, the bureau said.

Heatwave conditions are expected to persist in parts of Andhra Pradesh till Saturday, over Uttar Pradesh from Tuesday to Thursday, and over west Rajasthan from Monday to Thursday, the weather bureau said. Hot and humid weather conditions are likely in pockets over Odisha till Tuesday and over Andhra Pradesh Sunday, it said.  End
