NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of most spices traded on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange ended lower Thursday. Coriander contracts fell for the third session amid weak demand and rising supplies. The jeera contract broke a six-session fall and ended marginally higher as buying interest emerged at lower levels.

The most-active June contract of CORIANDER fell 1.3% to INR 12,590 per 100 kg, as buying interest remained subdued at higher price levels. Demand has remained weak despite arrivals falling by 48% on year to 14,425 tonnes in May, according to SMC Global Securities. Muted exports and limited domestic demand have dampened buying appetite at higher price levels.

Though coriander price has eased from the record high of INR 13,798 seen in April, it is still high. Coriander had last traded around INR 13,500 per 100 kg in June 2015.

The most active June contract of TURMERIC was down 0.2% at INR 15,584 per 100 kg amid ample supplies and limited demand. "Total turmeric arrivals during May stood at 71,694 tonnes, marking a sharp increase of 124% compared to the corresponding period last year," SMC Global Securities said. Telangana led arrivals with 23,976 tonnes, followed by Maharashtra at 18,056 tonnes, Andhra Pradesh at 17,641 tonnes, and Karnataka at 3,354 tonnes, it added.

The contract may move higher in coming days amid emerging demand at lower levels. "However, ongoing arrivals remain higher, which may cap any steep price surge," SMC Global added.

The most-active June contract of JEERA rose 0.1% to INR 18,945 per 100 kilograms. The contract rose slightly as some buying interest emerged at lower levels. Jeera prices have been on a losing streak since May 26 amid rising crop arrivals from Rajasthan and limited demand. Arrivals in major markets remained higher by 45% on year at 47,185 tonnes in May, SMC Global said.
