MUMBAI – Prices of maize and rice were steady, while prices of wheat saw mixed trends in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of wheat fell in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, due to a rise in arrivals, they said. Maize prices are expected to rise in the near term due to prospects of higher demand from the ethanol sector, they said. Rice prices could remain steady due to low market activity, they said.

 

WHEAT prices in Indore fell by INR 10 per 100 kilograms to INR 2,580 per 100 kg Thursday, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices fell due to a rise in arrivals, he said. Farmers are offloading their remaining stocks of crops to finance their expenses for purchasing fertilisers and seeds for the kharif season, he said. Arrivals are likely to remain elevated in the near term, and amid ample supply of wheat, prices are likely to fall further, he said.

 

Prices of wheat in Kota, Rajasthan, were steady Wednesday at INR 2,375-INR 2,400 per 100 kg, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals fell by 7,000 bags to 15,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices remained stable despite a fall in arrivals, he said. "Market sentiment is low. Prices won't rise just because arrivals have slowed down for one day," he said. Mehta expects prices to fall in the near term as the government's procurement operations have been wrapped up in Rajasthan, he said. Amid low demand for wheat, prices were largely supported by the government's purchases of wheat at the minimum support price of INR 2,585 per 100 kg, he said. "Now that procurement is over, there won't be proper support, and currently, there is only demand for the best quality wheat in the market," he said.

The price of wheat in Vashi was steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader. Prices were supported by government procurement amid low market activity, he said. 

 

The price of MAIZE in Indore was unchanged at INR 2,175 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Though arrivals of maize also increased in Madhya Pradesh as farmers looked to earn enough cash for the kharif sowing season, prices have remained steady amid stable demand, he said. Demand for maize is likely to rise in the near term, particularly from the ethanol sector, amid the push for higher ethanol blending in fuel, he said. 

 

Prices of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka, were steady at INR 1,800-INR 2,050 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 800 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said.

 

Prices of RICE varieties were steady in Vashi, Vora said. Prices of the 1409 and 1509 varieties of basmati rice were steady at INR 9,400-INR 9,500 per 100 kg and INR 8,200-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, he said. Prices of the 1121 variety of basmati rice were also steady at INR 10,000-INR 10,200 per 100 kg, he said. Prices of the 1409 variety of basmati rice have settled after a sharp rise on Wednesday due to a rise in domestic demand, he said. "That was a one-time rise in demand. Maybe buyers wanted to finally stock up on the grain. Now prices are expected to remain steady in the near term," he said.
