MUMBAI – Prices of chana and masur were unchanged, while those of tur fell in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Tur prices were weighed down by low demand amid higher arrivals, they said. Chana prices are expected to fall further as arrivals are likely to remain steady amid sluggish demand, they said. Urad prices could stay unchanged due to tepid market activity, they said.
CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,150-INR 6,200 per 100 kilograms, said Dinesh Mangal, a local trader. Prices have stabilised temporarily amid a downtrend due to a rise in arrivals, he said. "Arrivals have increased everywhere because farmers are selling their remaining stock for cash so that they can buy all essentials needed for kharif sowing," he said. Arrivals are expected to remain slightly elevated for another month, which is likely to push prices lower, he said.
Arrivals have also increased as the government's procurement has largely been wrapped up, Mangal said. "Previously, most farmers were selling their crops to the government because the latter was purchasing them at the minimum support price of INR 5,875 per 100 kg, which was higher than the market rate during Mar-May. But even if procurement had not ended, farmers would have preferred selling their crops in the market because now rates have gone above the minimum support level," he said.
Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,975-INR 6,025 per 100 kg, traders said.
TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, fell by INR 100 per kg to INR 7,400-INR 7,900 per 100 kg Thursday, said Rahul Srinivas, a local trader. Around 15–16 trucks carrying 20,000-INR 25,000 kg of tur each arrived in the market, he said. Prices were weighed down by sluggish demand amid a rise in arrivals, he said. Demand had risen steeply a few weeks ago, and most traders and millers stocked up on tur then, he said. "They have stocks to process into tur dal, or processed tur, now, so demand has reduced significantly," he said.
Though demand is expected to remain muted while arrivals are steady, prices are unlikely to fall further in the near term, Srinivas said. As prices have already slipped below the minimum support price of INR 8,000 per 100 kg, farmers are expected to resist a further fall in prices, he said.
The movement of prices in the medium term will depend on the onset and progress of the monsoon throughout Maharashtra, Srinivas said. Maharashtra has remained largely dry in the past few weeks, which has deterred farmers from sowing tur, he said. Typically, tur sowing commences in the state during this time of the year, he said. According to the India Meteorological Department, the monsoon hit Kerala on Thursday, three days after its normal date of Jun. 1. It is likely to advance further into some parts of Maharashtra in the next two to three days, the weather department said.
Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 50 per 100 kg to INR 8,100-INR 8,200 per 100 kg Thursday, the India Pulses and Grains Association said.
MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 6,100-INR 6,200 per 100 kg, Mangal said. Prices were unchanged amid low market activity, he said. Demand for masur has declined markedly, and its arrivals have also slowed down, he said. Most of the rabi crop has been procured by the government, which was purchasing the commodity at the minimum support price of INR 7,000 per 100 kg. Prices are likely to remain range-bound in the near term as large fluctuations in demand are not expected, Mangal said.
Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,000-INR 6,500 per 100 kg, according to the association. End
