MUMBAI – The advancement of the southwest monsoon over Kerala on Thursday is likely to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of the state till Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department said. The presence and prospects of further movement of the monsoon trough is also expected to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from Friday to Sunday and over north interior Karnataka on Friday, the weather department said.

 

The southwest monsoon set in over Kerala as of Thursday, three days after its normal date of Jun. 1, covering Kerala and Lakshadweep Islands entirely, the weather department said. It has also advanced over the remaining parts of the Arabian Sea, the Comorin Area, most parts of the Bay of Bengal, and some parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, the department said. Conditions are favourable for further advance of the trough over entire Goa, remaining parts of Tamil Nadu, some more parts of Karnataka and the Bay of Bengal, and some parts of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and the northeastern states in the next two to three days.

 

As such, heavy rainfall is likely to persist over most parts of south peninsular India till Wednesday, the weather department said. The trough's movement over northeast India is also likely to trigger very heavy rainfall over parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya from Saturday to Tuesday, the department said. Heavy rainfall is expected over most parts of northeast India till Wednesday, it said.

 

In east India, heavy rainfall is expected to continue over parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands till Friday, and over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till Wednesday, the weather department said. In central India, thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 kilometres per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are expected over parts of Madhya Pradesh till Friday and Chhattisgarh till Saturday, the department said. Light to moderate showers with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected to persist over multiple parts of central India till Monday.

 

An upper air cyclonic circulation over Konkan and Goa and the adjoining eastcentral Arabian Sea is expected to cause heavy rainfall over parts of Konkan and Goa till Wednesday, over central Maharashtra on Friday and from Sunday to Wednesday, the weather bureau said. 

 

The presence of several weather systems above and near northwest India are expected to cause heavy rainfall over parts of Uttarakhand till Friday and hailstorms over Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Uttarakhand till Friday, the weather bureau said. Moderate to severe thunderstorms with wind speeds reaching 50–60 km per hour are likely over multiple parts of northwest India in the next two to three days, the bureau said.

 

Heatwave conditions are expected in pockets of Bihar from Saturday to Monday, in east Uttar Pradesh from Sunday to Wednesday, and in east Uttar Pradesh from Monday to Wednesday, the weather department said. Hot and humid weather conditions are likely to prevail in parts of Odisha till Monday, and in coastal Andhra Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry till Friday, the department said.  End
