NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of most spices traded on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange closed lower Wednesday. However, turmeric contracts broke the four-session losing streak and ended marginally higher as buying interest improved at lower levels. However, the gains were limited amid rising supplies in local markets.

The most-active June contract of TURMERIC rose 0.6% to 15,718 per 100 kg, after hitting a fresh two-week low of INR 15,470 earlier in the day. The contract closed in the green on Wednesday after consecutively falling for four sessions. However, the gains were limited amid rising daily arrivals in local markets and discounts for poor-quality, high-moisture produce.

The most-active June contract of CORIANDER fell 0.6% to INR 12,670 per 100 kg amid weak buying interest at prevailing prices despite limited arrivals across major markets. "Weekly average arrivals dropped significantly by 64% to 2,431 tonnes compared to 6,841 tonnes during the corresponding period, indicating tightening spot supplies," SMC Global Securities said.

However, losses were limited amid concerns of arrivals further declining. "Arrivals have already started tapering off in Gujarat and are expected to decline further in key producing states such as Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan over the coming weeks, which is likely to keep market fundamentals supportive," it added.

The most-active June contract of JEERA fell 0.3% to INR 18,870 per 100 kilograms. The contract has been on a losing streak since May 26 amid rising crop arrivals from Rajasthan and limited demand.

"Market sentiment remains cautious as participants are adopting a wait-and-watch approach, which is also weighing on prices," SMC Global Securities said. Jeera futures is expected to trade with a weak bias in INR 18,570–INR 19,270 range due to persistent supply pressure, it added.
