MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra were steady due to need-based demand at higher rates, traders said. Moreover, there are stocks in the pipeline, which is why traders are not eager buyers at the moment, they said.
Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady as demand did not pick up at higher prices, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Traders in the resale market are reluctant to buy as there are ample stocks in the pipeline, but demand is picking up slowly, he said.
In the resale market, prices fell by INR 5–INR 10 per 100 kg, he said. But prices could increase in the coming days due to strong household demand at the start of every month, Gupta added.
Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are likely to rise this week as demand improves temporarily, he added.
Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Flat at INR 3,990-INR 4,130 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,990-INR 4,130 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 4,072-INR 4,152 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,945-INR 3,960 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1910 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was steady at 14.37 cents per pound. End
US$1 = INR 95.71
