MUMBAI – Prices of tur and urad fell in select spot markets amid muted demand, while those of chana remained stable, traders said. Chana prices are expected to fall in the near term, as arrivals are likely to remain slightly elevated and farmers look to sell stocks to finance kharif sowing, they said.

 

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,150-INR 6,200 per 100 kilograms, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Although arrivals have increased, prices remained steady amid stable demand, he said. Farmers, who still hold stocks, are offloading them to finance the upcoming kharif sowing, he said. "Arrivals have increased in most farm commodities because farmers need cash to buy fertilisers and seeds for the kharif season," he said.

 

Prices of chana are likely to fall in the near term as arrivals are expected to remain elevated till kharif sowing begins in full swing, Kochar said. However, in the medium term, chana stocks are likely to reduce considerably, which could support prices, he said.

 

Prices of chana in Delhi were unchanged at INR 5,975-INR 6,025 per 100 kg, traders said.

 

TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, fell by INR 25 per 100 kg to INR 8,000-INR 8,025 per 100 kg Wednesday, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Prices fell amid low demand and steady arrivals, he said. Tur arrivals have increased as farmers are looking to finance their kharif sowing, he said. In the near term, prices are expected to fall by INR 100-INR 200 per 100 kg as demand is likely to remain sluggish, he said.

 

However, in the medium term, prices are expected to rise due to lower arrivals, Kedia said. "Farmers will be too busy with kharif sowing, and also, by then, most of them won't hold large stocks," he said. An uptrend in prices is also likely in the medium term due to growing concerns about a fall in imports, he said. "Many in the market feel imports will be hit because of rising shipping costs. We won't have enough stocks of domestic tur to make up for the shortfall in imports, and the next crop will arrive only after six months," he said. 

 

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 8,150-INR 8,250 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association. 

 

URAD prices in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, fell by INR 100 per 100 kg to INR 8,350 per 100 kg Wednesday, traders said. Prices of urad in Jaipur, Rajasthan, remained steady at INR 7,400-INR 8,400 per 100 kg, they said. Prices remained steady in Jaipur amid a lack of fresh cues, while they fell in some markets due to low demand for urad dal (processed urad), they said.

 

However, a steep fall in prices is unlikely as demand for urad is expected to rise once the monsoon sets in and temperatures decrease, the association said in its weekly report on Monday. Concerns about deficient rainfall will encourage farmers to shift from other crops to urad as the latter requires less water than crops such as soybean and cotton, it said. The government's procurement of the summer crop is also likely to support prices in the medium term, it said.  End
